More than 150 awards have been handed out at the annual Capricornia District awards ceremonies in Gladstone and Rockhampton this week.
They included a Bravery Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Exemplary Conduct Medal and Certificates, National Emergency Medal, and Commissioners Certificate of Notable Action.
Gladstone Water Police Officer in Charge Sergeant Jeffrey Barnett received a Queensland Police Bravery Medal at the Gladstone award ceremony on Tuesday for recognition of his exceptional bravery and selflessness in an extremely dangerous and volatile situation in 1996.
On the evening of October 18, 1996, then-Senior Constable Jeffrey Barnett and Constable Robert Priddey were performing general duties on Mornington Island when they were dispatched to an incident involving the discharge of a firearm.
Upon arrival, the two officers were confronted by a large gathering of people.
The officers successfully retrieved the firearm and after securing the firearm, re-entered the crowd to arrest the offender who had initially fired the gun.
Whilst attempting to arrest the male offender, Constable Priddey was assaulted a number of times and stabbed.
Senior Constable Barnett entered the crowd to assist his partner and was also assaulted and stabbed, with both officers able to make it out to safety and were treated for their wounds.
Capricornia District Officer Superintendent Mark Burgess said each recipient should be proud of the hard work and professionalism they deliver every day for the Queensland Police Service.
“Every recipient awarded this week has displayed commendable work ethic and I am pleased to recognise and thank these members of the Queensland Police Service,” he says.
“Their sacrifice, bravery, integrity and professionalism have a profound impact on the communities they serve.”
