Nearly 100 people have been caught speeding during a recent road safety operation by the Rockhampton Highway Patrol, aimed at curbing road trauma across the Rockhampton region.
Officers have handed out more than 350 fines, including 99 for speeding, 33 for stop sign offences, 20 for seatbelt offences, and 13 for mobile offences.
The high-visibility road safety operation focused on enforcement and engagement activities targeting dangerous driving behaviours, and the causal factors associated with fatal and serious injury traffic crashes.
Police conducted 1,500 roadside breath tests and 45 roadside drug tests, detecting 9 drink drivers and 12 drug drivers.
An illegal e-bike was also seized under Queensland’s new legislation.
A 15-year-old boy was pulled over riding along Adelaide Park Road in Yeppoon, doing around 40 kays an hour on the wrong side of the road.
Capricornia District Inspector Ben Wiltshire says the level of proactive enforcement undertaken by Rockhampton Highway Patrol saw significant results across the wider Rockhampton area.
“Every interaction with a road user provides an opportunity to influence driving behaviour and prevent serious, or even fatal, outcomes.”
“The 21 impaired drivers removed from the road represent 21 opportunities where a tragedy may have been prevented.”
