A copper theft crackdown across Central Queensland has seen six people charged with 81 offences, as part of Operation Xray Genisis.
The copper wire had been stolen from locations including Sarina, Blackwater, Emerald, Clermont, Biloela, Monto, Miriam Vale, and Hervey Bay.
The approximate cost for these thefts, inclusive of replacement and repairs is estimated to be between $500,000 and $600,000.
Around 150kg of copper wire has been recovered through the multi-agency response this week.
Capricornia District Detective Inspector Luke Peachey said further arrests around copper theft can be expected.
“This operation is a reminder that anyone caught property offending will be located and dealt with,” Detective Inspector Peachey said.
“We are committed to driving down copper theft throughout our District, and we would like to thank members of the public for their assistance with ongoing investigations.”
“We ask members of the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, including people removing items from construction sites, sporting grounds, and other commercial venues.”
Among those charged were a 46-year-old Gracemere man, a 33-year-old Gracemere man and a 31-year-old Gracemere woman.
They’re facing a combined 70 charges including fraud, wilful damage, and stealing.
All three are due to appear before Rockhampton Magistrates Court on December 10.
