BLOOD THE BEST GIFT FOR MUMS THIS MOTHER’S DAY

Partners of expectant mothers are being called on to donate blood to help the one in five pregnant women who need life-saving blood products, in a new campaign which kicks off this Mother’s Day. The Australian Red Cross Blood Service estimates more than 58,000 mums to receive blood or blood products annually in Australia. Every year, close to 53,000 pregnant women receive a blood product called Anti-D, which prevents a blood type incompatibility and ensures the safe arrival of their baby. A further 5,200 Aussie mums will require a transfusion of blood and blood products at the time of birth. Blood Service spokesperson Barry Lynch said their new She Gives Birth You Give Blood campaign, which launches today, was developed in response to the number of Australian women who need donated blood during pregnancy and birth. “Pregnancy is an exciting time for new parents, but sometimes partners can experience feelings of helplessness,” he said. “No-one knows exactly what’s going to happen during pregnancy or birth, but we do expect blood will be available if we need it.” To help meet the ongoing need for blood, the Blood Service is encouraging partners of expectant mothers to donate three times during pregnancy – once every trimester. “Donating blood is an easy way to support your partner during pregnancy,” Mr Lynch said. “Every blood donation saves three lives, which means each donation during your partner’s pregnancy could save the life of your partner, your unborn child and someone else. “We need to ensure blood is always available so that all mums get the chance to celebrate Mother’s Day.” To make an appointment to donate blood call 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood.com.au
