Katter to back local Indigenous artists from fake artefact sales
North Queensland MP Bob Katter insists foreign countries are robbing Aboriginal identity by forging Indigenous artefacts and selling them here.
The Katter's Australian Party leader claims up to 90 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artefacts being sold are actually made overseas.
He says he'll be pushing the issue in Federal parliament in an effort to protect Indigenous artists.
The push is a carryon from an Office of Fair Trading compliance operation in March into Indigenous art and souvenirs.
12 Queensland retailers were forwarded for further investigation.
2 Rockhampton Art galleries and warehouses were checked at the time....3 in Mackay.
