Decision looms for NRL game in CQ
Central Queensland footy fans could find out today if Rockhampton will get a slice of the NRL action.
Local officials are "very confident" the region will host a game, as Queensland becomes a hub for the sport amid COVID outbreaks interstate.
Queensland Rugby League Central Division manager Rob Crow says details were set to be finalised in a meeting with the NRL on Tuesday afternoon.
"We're hoping to be able to announce something pretty soon but there's still some negotiation to go on, times ticking away," Mr Crow says.
"The game that we're chasing is on Saturday week."
If successful, Browne Park would host the Round 20 clash between St George Illawarra Dragons and South Sydney Rabbitohs on Saturday July 31st.
Mr Crow says there's a lot of work to be done between now and then, so would hope a decision will be made within the next 24 hours.
"With looking around the 5,000 people mark there is a lot of work to be done, it's not just a matter of turning up and the guys playing," Mr Crow says.
He says the venue will be ready if it gets chosen to host the match.
