Gladstone's 100-year-old port is getting a fresh new look, to help future proof the structure.

The multi-million dollar project is commencing this week on the Gladstone Port Corporation's oldest wharf, Auckland Point One. Local contractor Joseph Engineering will be working on the $6 million dollar development to add new marine pylons, buffers and securing equipment.

Once completed, the wharf will be able to handle larger vessels, such as roll on, roll of cargo vessels.

GPC’s chief operating officer Craig Walker says the upgrade will help improve the port, bring in more jobs and hopefully increase international trade.

“The facility has been operating since the 1920’s when horses and cattle were exported even before coal,” Mr Walker says.

“It’s an exciting development for the port and it is humbling to see the facility’s history will live on with the new upgrades.”
